I have discussed with my broker many times that the short position of a security should be available to the invester daily. It appears the average invester can only obtain the short interest month as Jan posts from the Wall Street Journal. See this quote:

"Securities subject to close-out
requirement are those with an aggregate "clearing" short position
of 10,000 shares or more that equals or exceeds one half of one
percent of the total shares outstanding. The NASD will identify
these securities daily based on data from National Securities and
Clearing Corporation and compile a "restricted list.""

Obviously, there is a daily database of short interest. This means the market makers know the short interest so it is likely their firm knows the short interest as well as the analysts. Why cannot the average invester have access to this database?

Bill,

Did I ever thank you and Judy for bringing VERT to my notice ???? It was at 50 then and I did try to think of it as an Ebay in the making (profitwise)

:-)

Cool. PHCM breaks out today. Take a look at FDRY. Normal
profit taking inthe biotechs or beginning of something
serious. We have seen huge run ups in the second and third
tier biotechs. That usually signals the end of the move.

Thanks
Anindo
