No matter what you buy this year, you won't get the benefits you are looking for. Simply exchanging for faster RAMBUS won't change performance since your chipset will still treat it like whatever is available today... if you are looking for the best performance for most uses, SDRAM is your choice currently. And it is a lot less costly. In a year, RDRAM may be the right choice.

In answer to your other question, Intel always has to push technology ahead of demand or even utility - look at the 386 - no SW, no market, slower and more expensive than 286 products at the time - but it changed the game.
