Why is Rambus such a troubled technology?

I'm not an expert in this area, you probably know more than me. It's my understanding that Rambus is being pushed by Intel to the chagrin of the majority of mobo manufacturers. It is more expensive and harder to implement than DDR, however it will be faster than DDR in the long term. Hasn't the i840 board been delayed because of problems with Rambus?

Cost comparison of RDRAM to SDRAM from pricewatch.com

128Mb RDRAM = $ 560
128Mb SDRAM = $ 64

Granted the RDRAM will allow faster CPU access but it still seems to be prohibitively expensive at this time.

Some quick research reveals that it is being used in Playstations?

Fill me in, I'm listening.
