gary, A unhappy fan. Joan CC: Tim Curley, Athletic Director Graham Spanier, President Okay, the boys in Happy Valley have gotten just a bit too greedy... My "alma mater" is trying to take "alma money". I got my ticket invoice yesterday and the ticket price has risen from $32 per seat to $38. Why? That's a 19% increase in one year! And for what? Are existing ticket holders paying for the expansion? If so, that's a bunch of bull! Perhaps the new sky boxes aren't selling as well as PSU would like you to believe? Over the past few years, tickets have gone from $28 to $38. The Nittany Lion Club ransom for four tickets has risen from $200 to $250. Don't get me wrong, price increases are to be expected. But the inflation rate in the US over the past decade has remained 3% or less per year. Furthermore, most employers are not keeping pace with it with wages, so discretionary income is actually decreasing. Add to that the fact that employers are paying less and less each year for employee health insurance. There goes more discretionary income! Other changes... The south parking lot, once a wonderful grassy sunny place, has been paved over and the BJC, while a wonderful facility, took much of its real estate. Some kind of new "visitors center" will take parking real estate away from the NE corner. And somehow they are supposed to park another estimated 2,500+ cars for the expansion! The rent-a-cops that steer cars into the parking lots have become idiots over the past three years. They don't communicate with one another and often provide contrary orders only a block apart. The alumni who have been going to these games for decades know where to go!!! Why should I get up at 5:30 a.m. to drive up from Harrisburg, sit through traffic, return late at night, pay a babysitter $50 on top of that, etc.? Bottom line: I am giving up the four season tickets that have been in my family for over three decades. It ain't worth it. Especially in light of Fran Ganter's promotion (trust me, he ain't what we want in a head coach when Joe leaves), the lousy home schedule in 2000, and nearly all games on tv (only 1 not televised over last four plus years!). My estimated savings: $1,300 - $2,000 per year. Penn State, you got greedy. Perhaps your tax status should be re-evaluated. ----------------------------------------- Jerry Britton, PSU '85 jbritton@dsop.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- For assistance with the list "PSUFootball", send the message "help" to "listserv@dsop.com".
