You don't have to be business savvy.
They don't have any other alternative. Do they?

New release every year for desktop with loaded bloatwares are not going to keep them moving. Those days will be gone.
They have to compete on e-business and they have to have a better, stable and scaleable product than their shitty NT and W98. More over things are moving towards service oriented model. Now they have to compete with all entrenched and experienced players.

Palm and WhateverPC are a new market and MSFT wanted to leverage with their old platform. That is where they are meeting a good enemy. It is a new appliance arena
and PALM is ready to share their wealth with all powerful players.

Now SONY with PlayStation2 started giving yet another kick
from unexpected angle.

I love competition.
