Take a look at the chart on a 1-minute base scale. What you'll see in many circumstances when the volume is big (or better yet - "expected" to be big) is a periodic pattern of highs and lows, repeating clearly over several cycles.

You have the undivided attention of real-time daytrading activity, "synchronously" (perhaps started by kick on CNBS, or other event) driving the price and expecting the 15-minute delayed crowd to react to the impulses. For "textbook" cases see below:

Take a look at NETP about 15:14 and then 15:33. Good for a point for daytrader. No fundamentals or much thinking necessary.

TXCC : look at volume "impulses" starting at 15:00.

CDTS : short and refill starting 15:36.

MM presumably know this trick well. I just discovered it recently by staring at charts - like you.
