Families return after blowout 02/29/2000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DUSTIN - A safety device used to measure gas pressure was blamed Monday for a natural gas well blowout, which caused the evacuation of about 30 families. Families returned home early Monday after crews capped the well about 1 a.m. Town Marshal Frank Blankenship said the safety measuring device failed, causing the blowout when a drilling crew hit a gas vein that had more pressure than expected about 8:15 p.m. Sunday. "If we would've had some wind it would've blown the gas out pretty quick, but we didn't, and it just kind of settled in the low-lying areas," he said. Hughes and Okfuskee county sheriff's departments helped with the evacuation. One deputy received oxygen after too much exposure to the fumes, but was doing fine Monday, Blankenship said. The fumes had spread across parts of Hughes and Okfuskee counties, causing the closure of State Highway 84 and other roads Sunday night. All roads were opened Monday morning, Blankenship said.
