Sun Replaces HP As Top Supplier Of Unix Servers In Japan
Thursday, March 23, 2000
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Sun Microsystems Inc. replaced Hewlett-Packard Co. in 1999 as the top supplier of Unix servers in Japan, according to figures released Wednesday by the Dataquest division of GartnerGroup Japan KK.

Sun Microsystems' share of the Japanese market for Unix servers rose 4.9 percentage points to 29.7%. The popularity of its Enterprise 10000 unit for Internet service providers contributed to the growth. Hewlett-Packard ranked second with a 27.4% share.

Despite restraint on capital investment stemming from fears of a year 2000 computer glitch, domestic shipments of Unix servers grew by 5.1% to 220.4 billion yen.

Shipments of PC servers also grew 6.3% to 176.8 billion yen, led by NEC Corp. (6701), whose share of the domestic market fell slightly to 30.4%. Fujitsu Ltd. (6702) ranked second with a 17.1% share, up 3.4 percentage points, helped by its Granpower series.
