We can all get some insight by peeling through
this puppy... isn't it wonderful how Linley "Merced"
Gwennap is so plugged in.. after all , he broke Itanium
and here he is with the architects:

linleygroup.com

But back to his little forthcoming gem:

More than 20 major system vendors and six operating-system vendors are committed to
delivering IA-64 products when Itanium (code-named Merced) begins shipping next year.

Next year? But every roadmap says Itanium 2H00, this is
interesting. Maybe this is why the thread is quiet
on this "great news?"

"All IA-64 processors will execute x86 instructions in hardware"

Another interesting revelation.. McKinley wasn't supposed
to offer this... someone must have gotten an idea.

"Only Sun seems
committed to a pure RISC strategy. As a result, IA-64 systems
running Windows 2000, Linux, and Monterey Unix will be the
dominant server and workstation platforms"

Looks like Linley is confirming Sun's committment to
UltraSparc. Makes sense, they sure can make a lot more
money selling high-end UltraSparc servers versus commodity
boxes.
