The Smart Card...tech info, China. Tuesday, March 14, 2000 TECHNOLOGY CKI forms smart card venture with On Track of Israel CKI managing director: Kam Hing-lam PEGGY SITO Cheung Kong Infrastructure (CKI) has formed a co-operative venture with Israel-based On Track Innovations (OTI) to introduce a microprocessor-based smart-card technology to the region. CKI managing director Kam Hing-lam said that the joint venture would capitalise on the rapid development of e-commerce and Internet technology, which was expected to further open up the fast-growing market for smart cards. The global smart card market is expected to reach US$24 billion in 2002, with Asia comprising one-third of it, according to CKI. The technology in question, which is available to be launched, will allow various applications such as transportation, e-commerce and security solutions. CKI is 84.58 per cent-owned by blue chip Hutchison Whampoa. CKI's electronic infrastructure investment would not conflict with Hutchison, Mr Kam said. Instead, it would co-operate with the group's high-technology development, he said without elaborating. Mr Kam declined to unveil total investment of the venture, but he said the venture would spend $100 million for marketing. He said CKI would contribute its local knowledge and established network in Asia, and the Germany-listed OTI would provide technology and product expertise to the venture. Earning's would be equally shared. Mr Kam said that the electronic infrastructure project was in line with the group's business. "We are already a technology firm," he said. This technology was applicable to roads and water-supply projects, Mr Kam said.
