LINK: Digital Cable Rises Fast: NCTA

multichannel.com

Daily Update for March 09, 2000:

Washington -- Cable operators added more than 720,000 new digital-video subscribers during the first two months of 2000, a report said Thursday.

The National Cable Television Association said a membership survey showed that digital cable is growing faster than direct-broadcast satellite so far this year. It also said 5.8 million cable subscribers have added new digital-video tiers since the service was introduced in 1996.

Cable companies also added more than 250,000 new high-speed-data customers in January and February, the NCTA said, raising the cable-modem-customer count to 1.85 million.

As evidence of accelerating deployments, the association cited a recent announcement by Time Warner Cable that it would increase its capital budget for digital-video and cable-modem deployment from a planned $1.6 billion to nearly $2 billion during 2000.
