Microsoft Launches Chinese-Language Version of Windows 2000 March 10, 2000 (TAIPEI) -- Microsoft Corp. officially launched the Chinese-language version of Windows 2000 in Taiwan on March 8. The new operating system has already debuted in more than 10 other countries in other non-English language versions. Microsoft Taiwan said it was ready to advise businesses on the effective installation, implementation and management of the system. In a launch ceremony, Microsoft Taiwan also announced that four Taiwanese software concerns had already received Windows 2000's global authentication: Trend PC-cillin, Attention System Development Co., Ltd., Ching Hang Information Co., Ltd. and Wellan System Co., Ltd. As only 27 software companies in the world have so far received this certification, this represents an encouraging development for Taiwan. The English-language version of Windows 2000 has already sold over 50,000 sets in the United States since its debut (without taking options into account). Microsoft Taiwan expects the Chinese-language version to sell well locally, with between 20,000 and 25,000 of every million personal computers adopting the software in the coming year to replace their older NT 4.0 and Windows 98 systems. A Microsoft Taiwan survey indicated that 80 percent of local businesses indicated plans to upgrade their operating system to Windows 2000 within the coming year from the present standard Windows 98. Windows 95 only exists these days in a few old-fashioned publishing houses in Taipei. Corporate use accounts for 65 percent to 70 percent of Taiwan's PC demand, with home consumers making up the other 35 percent. One of the technological innovations of Windows 2000 is that it provides a great deal of in-built interface software. This software takes up less space, is more secure and is cheaper. The operating system now accounts for only about 3 percent of the overall cost of a PC. (Commercial Times, Taiwan)
