Lemming like fund managers and dotty markets.

The old economy is suffering from a bear market, while the new has hit new heights. This has upset Sir John Banham. The former director-general of the Confederation of British Industry blames fund managers. They are, he thinks, incompetent lemmings.

Lemmings are notoriously dedicated to fashion. According to the popular myth, if it is fashionable to leap to your death only lemming wimps fail to leap. Sir John is, I think, quite correct in noting that fund managers are being fashion conscious in their actions as well as their dress. (To be 'the glass of fashion and the mould of form', you must dress down today rather than up. Silicon Valley rather than the Prince of Denmark is today's model.)

Sir John is, however, probably less fair in blaming fund managers for their attachment to fashion. Most fund managers are well aware that the market has gone bananas. What they do not and cannot know is (cont)
