Actually a third of Sanibel is preserved as open space, including the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. You are correct that traffic is bad now, the population swells during the "snowbird" season.

I live in nearby Naples, where the adult population doubles during the season. Here also, the traffic is getting much worse every year as the area rapidly grows.
