Hong Kong's leading Hang Seng index was up nearly 26 points, or 0.2
percent, at 17,662.95 in late trading, well below an early peak that carried the
index up more than 2 percent past the 18,000 mark shortly offer the start.
Blue-chip heavyweight Hutchison Whampoa was up more than 5 percent at
HK$143.50, supporting the leading gauge, a day after the conglomerate said it
is joining forces with the Li Ka-shing Foundation and U.S.-based Internet
Capital Group to purchase a Hong Kong-listed toymaker, Harbour Ring
International Holdings.
Dealers also attributed Hutchison's rise to a rise of nearly 2 percent
Thursday in Britain's Vodafone AirTouch, in which Hutchison holds a 10.1
percent stake. Hutchison parent Cheung Kong was 2.8 percent higher at
HK$109.50.
