Network Associates Meets With Members of Congress to Address Technology And Security Policy Issues
PR Newswire - March 09, 2000 16:27

myCIO.com Division Provides Demonstration of CyberCop ASaP Service at Congressional High Tech Summit

WASHINGTON, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Network Associates (Nasdaq: NETA), today announced that, as part of the Business Software Alliance's (BSA) 2000 policy summit, it will be providing Members of Congress with input on current security policy issues. At today's technology event, Network Associates' myCIO.com division will also demo some of its leading technologies, including its CyberCop ASaP service that helped clean thousands of computer systems during the recent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. The event is the latest effort by Network Associates and other members of the BSA to educate lawmakers and other officials about technology issues and to advocate Internet-friendly policies that will promote e-commerce.

"This event is part of an ongoing effort on the part of Network Associates to continue to educate Members of Congress on issues important to our industry, including network security, and to demonstrate our security solutions," said Kelly Blough, director of government relations for Network Associates. "CyberCop ASaP is an ideal example of how technology companies can lend their innovative technology to help solve problems, like DDoS attacks, that impact both public and private sectors. As a security leader, we are committed to providing expert information to leaders who help shape our public policy and protect public resources like the Internet."

Network Associates' myCIO.com division will provide Members of Congress with a demonstration of its CyberCop ASaP service, which was used to detect Zombie agents responsible for recent distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. In addition to detecting Zombie agents responsible for recent distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, the CyberCop ASaP service can detect the vulnerabilities that allow hackers to secretly deposit "zombie" agents that are called-upon in a coordinated fashion to overwhelm targeted web sites with requests. If the CyberCop ASaP service detects the Zombie agents or any vulnerabilities that can lead to distributed denial of service attacks, the user will receive detailed information on how to determine if the zombie agent is present, and if so, what steps are needed to disable it.

"The tremendous growth of the Internet has led to a number of significant challenges, such as protecting creative works online and Internet users' security and privacy, that high tech leaders -- and policymakers must tackle," said Robert Holleyman, BSA President and CEO. "As countries address these challenges, BSA and its member companies will work closely with the U.S. government and our trading partners to encourage the adoption of Internet-friendly policies to further the growth of the new economy."

The free Zombie Scan service is a subset of the CyberCop ASaP product, one of the world's first web-based security audit application service. While Zombie Scan only checks for the vulnerabilities and agents associated with the recent DDoS attacks, CyberCop ASaP software conducts more than 700 tests across all major operating systems to provide detailed vulnerability reports and proposed fixes to help customers secure their e-business. Because the CyberCop ASaP product is web-based, it reduces the time required to conduct comprehensive security audits from months to minutes.
