Chip Sales Start Strong In 2000
(03/08/00, 7:35 p.m. ET) By Robert Ristelhueber, EE Times
Sales of semiconductors jumped 33 percent in January compared to the same month a year ago, with the Asia-Pacific region and Japan showing the strongest gains, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).

Worldwide semiconductor sales in January were $14.8 billion, compared to $11.1 billion in January 1999. Month-to-month sales were up 0.4 percent from December, a change from the usual seasonal fall-off. "The chip industry is off to a strong start for year 2000," said George Scalise, president of the SIA, in San Jose, Calif. "Traditionally, January sales tend to be weak, however, these sales numbers convincingly illustrate the continuation of our industry's growth pattern that commenced in mid-1998."

The Asia-Pacific region and Japan grew 46 and 43 percent, respectively, while the Americas market was up 25 percent from last year, and Europe's sales grew at 22 percent, the SIA reported. Telecom chips, flash memory, and digital signal processors led the way with strong growth, the organization reported.
