Spek, i recently nibbled at the tobacco stocks, based on the view that probably a lot of bad news is already priced in and that their performance will not be hampered much by an economic slowdown. i believe the litigation worries have become overblown at this point and the insiders are buying big. i bought some oil stocks and REITS (have to be very careful when selecting REITS btw. - make damn sure the dividend is safe). right now i'm taking a very close look at the insurance industry. the overcapacity and competitive pressures plus the need to do something for shareholders will probably bring on a wave of consolidation, so this is mainly a play on takeover potential. let's not forget the repeal of Glass Steagall has widened the circle of potential acquirors considerably.
i agree btw. that there's a lot of as-of-yet unrealized value in GM...
EDIT: i also bought some of Jim Grants pick NLY. another one i'm considering here is Warrens Berkie.

regards,
