I don't imagine George saw much high-velocity stuff, at least not by modern standards. The upper edge of my experience on the receiving end was a .50 caliber machine gun, and that was quite big enough. A very different sound from the 5.56mm and 7.62mm stuff. A fellow I know who did time with the marines in Korea told me once about hearing salvos of 16-inch shells from battleships offshore go overhead, sounding like heavy trucks in the sky. I don't imagine that was particularly exhilarating for the folks they were landing on or near.
