Whoa! Don't get me started on the Timber industry. I've yet to meet a timber worker so uninformed as to blame anyone but the timber industry itself for the way things are that way. You're talking to soneone who has more than a slight clue as to the dynamic involved there. It's one of several areas I actually *agree with Gore. I'd be happy to take this to PM, Arch. I don't know how many timber workers you know, but I'm QUITE confident I'll come up with significantly more that believe as I do, than those that would blame the federal govt for what's happened to that industry. I happen to think Bruce Babbit was one of the best Secretaries of the Interior we've had in a long while. -- I don't just live on the west coast, Archie. I've lived in Northern Calif most of my life and am *quite familiar with the people involved on all sides. The *sides aren't as they once were. You don't find a big outraged collection of workers in Scotia (Pacific Lumber company town) running rage against Earth First! people, other than worrying about hurting someone accidentally in the woods. Check out Charles Hurwitz and the story of how 80's junk bonds were used to rape Palco (retirement fund) and continued on to clear cut (rape) it's way to killing off that industry. You think it's the spotted owl or the marbled muruelet, think again. Drive up hwy 101 and marvel at the redwoods along the highway, Now, go up in a plane or a helecopter and awe at how purposefully the clear cutting is concealed from the motorists on the road. It's sick. Again, I'm a Republican, but I'm smart enough to know that if it weren't for the Sierra Club, the Save The Redwoods League and recently Earth First, the (redwood) forest wouldn't exist (period). If Al Gore is going to sustain the environmental policies of the last 8 years, I'm there. I don't like Al Gore. I'm just saying that he's a known commodity. Bush (vote for me and SAVE) I don't know about. He doesn't really strike me as any less sleazy than Gore. -- As it turns out, this "Education, Economy and Environment" mantra of 4 years ago is an extremely appropriate collection of issues going forward. -- You sound you've missed the last 10 years JDN. People aren't moving out of California. I'd challenge you to back up that rhetoric with any facts not 10 years old. And those taxes as it turns out, never seem to be ones that people are willing to forego services for. It's a great example of how 'out of touch' GW Bush really is in the year 2000. I'm not defending Al Gore. I find him repugnant. As the incumbant, 'business as usual' sounds a lot better (as an investor and otherwise) than 'vote for me and SAVE'. -JCJ
