Warner-Lambert's Lipitor approved in Japan

MORRIS PLAINS, N.J., March 10 (Reuters) - Warner-Lambert Co
<WLA.N> said Friday its blockbuster anti-cholesterol drug,
Lipitor, had received marketing approval in Japan.
The New Jersey-based drugmaker said Lipitor would be
co-marketed by Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. <4503.T> in
Japan, the world's second-largest market for
cholesterol-lowering drugs.
"This approval represents an important milestone on
Lipitor's path to becoming the most successful pharmaceutical
product in the world," said Anthony Wild, president of
Warner-Lambert pharmaceuticals.
Lipitor (atorvastatin) was discovered by the Parke-Davis
Research division of Warner-Lambert and has been further
developed and co-marketed globally by New York-based drugmaker
Pfizer Inc. <PFE.N>
Pfizer on Feb. 7 agreed to buy Warner-Lambert for $90
million in stock, ending a three-month takeover battle that
revolved around Lipitor. The merger would create the largest
U.S. drug company and the world's No. 2 player in the highly
fragmented industry.
Lipitor, now available in 70 countries, had global sales of
$3.7 billion in 1999. Its sales are expected to jump to $5
billion in 2000, helped in part by introduction of the potent
cholesterol fighter in Japan.
Warner-Lambert's stock was up 7/8 at 98-3/8 Friday
afternoon in trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
