First of all, after spending nearly a week at OFC and comparing SDL to dozens of players, I've added to my position --- at 450 a share. Considering I don't jump onto moving trains without absolute confidence I've measured the risks, this is a monumental move.

I really like SDL's business plan. They're focusing on certain key markets and within those areas will buy strategic high-value technologies as needed. Contrary to others with fat share prices, they see no reason to own a company just to have a Wallmart-sized inventory of products. Instead, they'll target acquisitions to specific technologies they need to maintain a competitive advantage.

In brief, they're:

* Broadening their markets by adding 1480nm products.

* Adding acquisitions in areas they can't afford not to control.

* Bringing on a high-powered public relations firm, with plans for gaining brand awareness beyond photonics' circles. (We'll see a new website in the not-too-distant future.)

* Hiring at a good pace --- sdli.com (click on San Jose manufacturing or production)

* Gaining further interest on Wall Street --- appointments with analysts throughout the week.

When you combine an industry growing at a record pace (hype is under-hype) and a company focusing on high-growth, high-margin areas within it, you can't find a better investment than SDLI. All in my opinion, of course.

Later this week-end I'll give a summary of the over-all conference, including a list of pre-IPO picks.
