Jay, The easiest solution to your CF troubles is to buy a moderate capacity CF card and only remove it only to download pictures. I store spare cards in a jewel case with a foam rubber lining designed by Kodak specifically for storing CF. That would be another nice item to see, a clear plastic jewel case capable of holding 4 CompactFlash cards with a SanDisk logo emblazoned in the center.
