bgr, good point. all servers are just specialized computers and there are lots of servers. so, instead of using increased cpu horsepower a little it is probably somewhere closer to the middle. there are more desktops than servers. btw, many databases sit idle during the day and especially at night.

but that is a tangential issue. the real issue is that all those backend servers aren't contributing to an increase in revenues above and beyond historical averages.

THAT is the issue. we are growing revs at 2-3% now... just like we did in the 80s... and 70s...

what "new economy?

you appear to agree that measuring technical capability as an economic measure makes no economic sense. i have to assume b/c you won't say you agree - but neither are you debating the point.
