Advanced Tissue Says Patch Helps Grow Heart Blood Vessels
(Dow Jones Online News, 03/10/2000 06:06)

LA JOLLA, Calif. -(Dow Jones)- Advanced Tissue Sciences Inc. (ATIS) reported data showing its Dermagraft tissue-engineering product can stimulate blood vessel formation in the heart.

The metabolically active, tissue-engineered epicardial patch secretes growth factors and matrix proteins.

In a press release Friday, Advanced Tissue said preclinical studies conducted with researchers at the University of Arizona showed the Dermagraft patch could induce blood vessel formation to improve cardiac function.

The company said blood vessels formed as early as 14 days after application of the product and the blood vessels matured over time.

Dermagraft, in clinical use since 1991, is manufactured commercially and has demonstrated "a safe clinical profile" in wound-healing applications.
