The worse thing about the loss of this deal is that it is a huge hit to 3DNow! Game developers will now be optimizing for SSE.

But, if MS wins with the Xbox, gamers won't be buying regular PCs to play games with, anyway.

Pravin.

Re: X box processor

We have been asking for a while what Intel would do with the surplus 600 MHz CUmines they are producing while trying to fill the saleable bins. Selling them to MSFT, even if at below cost, makes sense. AMD could not complete against Intel trying to clear their rapidly devaluing chip mountain.

What I think will be interesting is the credibility of a system in late 2001 with only a 600 MHz processor. Microsoft would be stupid to buy processors so far in advance and so I have to assume the Xbox will have a GHz processor by then. Will Intel then be prepared to sell Willy for use in a games console? What would that do for their market segmentation strategy?

One things for sure. A lot will change between now and 2H 2001!

Pravin,

<Given AMD's limited fab capacity, I'm really starting to think this may end up being better for AMD. I agree with this Yahoo post:

messages.yahoo.com;

IMHO, this has little to do with the money that AMD would make on X-box and lot more to do with AMD's deal making skills and the perceptions that go with these high visibility deals.

The only positive thing that can be said in this context is that fall of 2001 is long time from now and a lot can happen between now and then. (just look back at the Gateway story)
