Mr. Metric--You're right, it's not difficult to change OLBs, but its inconvenient enough so that most folks don't do it, and most folks also realize that all OLBs have trouble (see Schwab two days ago), so there's little to gain from the switch.

And this isn't just my opinion--E*Trade holds better than 95% of their customers, which must astonish guys like you and Mr. Diamond, who apparently live to complain, bitch and moan (but who, to my utter astonishment, remain as customers of E*Trade!).

It's not hard to switch OLBs

I agree, but I think you are discounting lethargy/apathy. Mostly people sit and whinge, but dont do anything about it (whatever the subject, even the weather*)

So they are betting that they can grab the customers, and as long as they dont *really* piss them off, they'll keep them. And even for those folks looking to switch, whatever broker you name, there is a thread of horror stories for them. So probably most of us here end up with 2 or 3 accounts, because we never want to totally let go of the one we are with now in case the next one is even worse.

BTW, if you think US brokers are bad, you should try UK ones. Utterly abysmal.
