No, Craig, you don't "have" to. There are domestic brokers who will do so. Don't tell me, because I just said certain domestic as well as offshore brokers permit such. Trust me.

And, it has nothing to do with "laws." It has to do with two issues: 1) the house rules of the brokerage in question, and 2) Federal Reserve requirements regarding marginability. I won't get into the interplay between the two - you can see earlier posts of mine on this thread discussing those two factors and their relationship.
