It appears to be the case that ethnocentrism is natural, yes. People act as if it were a European invention, but, in fact, the Koreans think they are superior, the Japanese treat resident Koreans badly, the Chinese consider just about everyone else to be barbaric, the Zulu look down on other tribes, and even in Somalia, where they are all of the same tribe, the clan structure became a vehicle for violent conflict. Our ideas of brotherhood derive from Athens, mainly via the Stoics, and Jerusalem, via the prophets, and disseminated as part of Christianity. The ideas of brotherhood and universal justice are mainly Western, although there are occasional inklings in other traditions........

DMA, I do believe that racism, and hate, are taught because, it happened to me in my early life. Brotherhood, love, and understanding can also be learned if the lessons come soon enough. Growing up in the 50s, there was a lot of racism around me, and I didn't know any better than to believe what I heard at the time. As I reached my mid teens, I began to see that skin color had nothing to do with a person's worth. I saw black people step out of the mold that had been described to me earlier. I realized that each, individual person must be judged by what they are, regardless of stereotyping. I, also noticed that were about as many unsavory white people as there were black and
hispanic people. With the advent of gangs, some of that has changed, and because of that there is a disproportionate number of minorities in prison for the simple reason that most crimes are committed, for whatever reason, by minorities. I truly believe that the anquish of poverty has some bearing on that statistic also, as well as the expanding drug culture. Education is the primary answer IMO. If the ethnic groups could get to really know one another as individuals, many of the tensions could be erased. From what I have seen, there are good, bad, and mediocre people in all ethnic groups. ~H~
