JDN - re: Dell will be the first major PC maker to target the appliance server market, competing with companies such as Cobalt Networks Inc.
Sometimes these guys amaze me. CPQ's NeoServer is a Unix-based appliance server which has been on the market for over a year. Intel announced an initiative to allow OEMs to produce appliances more than 9 moths ago - Intel's initiative included work with Linux and other supporting pieces to enable this market.

re: Dell's new machines will run on Linux or Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 2000 operating systems and sell for $3,000 or less, which is about half the price of other appliance servers
CPQ's appliance is about $1200... they also have a caching appliance. Intel's package is targeted at $1000 street price.

It amazes me that people actually get paid to put out nonsense like this. Don't these guys read the papers or follow the industry?
