(Who can't figure out why Intel didn't just run with the Alpha since they bought it)

NIH?

Re: "I have heard rumors that Microsoft will not ship any programs for IA64 if Mfgs. deliver Linux64 before Windows is ready"

Do you really think that makes sense. If your competition beats you to market punish them by witholding your product?

Re: "All IA-64 processors will execute x86 instructions in hardware I suppose this would be technically true no matter how they simulated the x86 instructions.

Itanium doesn't simulate x86 instructions. It executes them directly.

Intel did not buy Alpha.

LOL! The long arm of the law might have something to say about Intel "buying" the Alpha.

TP - re: IA-64 is waiting mostly for Microsoft Windows64
couple of misconceptions - Itel has pumped money and engineering into almost any OS or major application that might run on IA64 - Linux, Monterray, even Solaris. The only one who would get hurt if MSFT did not ship 64 bit NT would be MSFT... since their IA32 apps would still run, just more slowly.

But MSFT has consistently committed to have a 64 bit OS ready when IA64 ships. Since the 64 bit version has been running for more than a year now on Alpha, and is based on the 32 bit codeline except for some kernel pieces, there is not a lot of design work to do on MSFT's part, I would think.

RE: can't figure out why Intel didn't just run with the Alpha since they bought it
Intel did not buy Alpha - they bought the fab that made Alpha. CPQ still owns all of the rights including design and production. Intel was obligated to produce Alphas for CPQ, but CPQ also buys from Samsung, and some say that IBM will also make some Alpha parts.

The current situation for CPQ and Alpha is no different than SUNW and SPARC - SUNW has no fab either...

Intel did not buy the Alpha. Intel bought the plant that manufactured the alpha for 700MM. Intel bought the SrongARM. Compaq bought the alpha along with the rest of DEC.

edit: I see now this has be answered.
