Yougang,

<Pru's Mossessman was at the convention today, and according to him (on24 interview) that Athlon logo was almost everywhere in developers' booth, and that indicated the very last minute change of mind on MSFT's mind.>

By all indications this deal was lost middle of this week so it was too late to change all the marketing material. Microsoft turned around replacing "AMD Athlon" with "Intel PIII" in high visibility spots but if you look at the details anywhere or comments from folks in the industry, you can see that the X-box was based on Athlon until Intel did the last minute hailmary thing.

I think Intel didn't want to suffer a second major PR loss (after 1G) this soon and pulled all stops to make it happen - a smart move from the "perception" angle.

<In one phrase, a mini betrayal by MSFT and a mini public embarrasment for AMD.

I expect MSFT to do something to heal AMD's wound.>

This is business - life goes on. There may be some mileage AMD can get from Microsoft but I doubt if it is much. However, telling everyone that cares to listen that Intel stole the business with scorched earth policies, IMHO, is not good for AMD - I am sure a lot of people, including some folks at Microsoft, will not appreciate it.
The PR aspect is not being handled well here - AMD is not coming across like a company in control of its destiny.

<After all, without AMD, MSFT cannot extract the best deal from Intel for xbox.>

You have a good point and I think this is where AMD should be focussing on now: AMD marketing/sales/PR guys should stop beating up on Intel and go focus on Microsoft to get whatever mileage they can get out of it.

Chuck

No embarrassment for AMD...only for MSFT. AMD did nothing wrong. I bet that Intel came in at the last minute with a low ball offer and AMD was unwilling to match it.

Yougang I regard the willingness of AMD to let it go and to not "win at all" cost a positive for AMD.

AMD is clearly feeling more confident in their ability to fully utilize their future capacity.
