I also question the sponsor of the study, and timing. Why release 1999 data now? What does SUNW have to say? I cannot imagine SUNW will snub a response.

I believe the issue of copper tech allowing IBM to use fewer processors than SUNW has been addressed before. Do you recall what SUNW's answer was?

I believe SUNW or an analyst placed a "spin" on the greater number of processors vs. copper saying that the SUNW system was more reliable and more feature rich. Do you know?

Re: "I agree, the IBM release is not meaningful. No numbers or specs except the number of boxes, too vague and might well be an apples-to-oranges comparison. Not "fair".
Doesn't matter. Sun still needs to answer. The "not available for comment" line is like taking the 5th: despite the judge's instructions, the jury reads it as an implied admission of guilt."

The silicon technology in the IBM RS/6000 S80 systems was ALLREADY 16 months old (now 22 months) when introduced in Sept 99. MUCH faster systems using current technology are on the near horizon. Maybe SUN will now put a little more emphasis on upgrading their systems to UltraSparc III. I would guess the "no competition on the horizon" excuse may not work any more.
