mephisto -
IDC is one of the most respected of the independent market measurement services, along with dataquest. No one pays for their studies but many (including me) pay for access to their data.

The problem with vendor spin on IDC data is that the data may not really support the spin... for example if the ASP on the UE10000 sales was close to $2M and the ASP on the IBM sales was closer to $200K, then the real ratio is 75 to 255 in revenue terms. And as I have said many times here, the UE10000 is not in itself an important revenue product (not trivial though...) - it is most important as a "magnet" for lots of 6500s, 3500s, etc. and the impact of ALL of those systems is what counts.

Also IBM has a habit of using "Big Blue" account control to get impressive early unit numbers - they cut sweetheart deals to replace older IBM gear with whatever they want to make look good - they can just about dial the number in. But it's not real penetration.
