I've purposely stayed clear of this discussion, but had one thought to add: the sufficiency of capital which one begins trading with is directly and inextricably linked to two factors, one of which Vadym pointed out: the strategy employed, whether scalping or position trading and two, the size of lots traded/number of positions held at one time. Anyone who opens a 50K account and starts trading with several 500 to 1000 share lots at one time is, in my opinion, asking for trouble unless they're experienced or lucky.

I learned to trade on a professional trading floor, in a $500,000+ inventory account which was bumped up as I demonstrated levels of profitability and skill. However, at first (as an ass't trader) I was never allowed to trade in greater than 500 share lots, and when trading baskets never more than 100 shares of each issue (typically 25 per basket).
