missing multi-million pound contract for broadband network in Wales baes on smaller 36177 switch: THURSDAY, MARCH 9 2000 1:37 PM EST MAR 9, 2000, M2 Communications - Maidenhead, Berkshire -- Newbridge Networks, specialist in telecommunications and networking solutions, is supplying its award winning 36177 multiservice platform to MLL Telecom, enabling it to create a rural communications broadband-wireless network for three Welsh counties - Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Powys. Newbridge's ATM infrastructure will power the network, which is based on MLL Telecom's broadband wireless technology. Between them, the companies will link the three councils and 12 towns across the region, enabling high-speed Internet access, and a platform to deliver regional information services as well as national incentives. The new Welsh network, the first of its kind on this scale in the UK, will promote economic and social developments in the region and redress the current imbalance in the network capacity within the area by providing high quality telecommunications and Internet services for both residents and businesses. The network will provide more people in mid-Wales with access to leading voice and data network services at a cost-effective price. MLL Telecom won the multi-million pound, five-year contract after a competitive tender and the network will be operational from the middle of 2000. MLL and Newbridge were selected as the solution offered the best total managed service at the most cost-effective price. The network demonstrated a real commitment to creating a backbone infrastructure in Wales that will enable the councils to achieve better multi-media communications at a reduced cost. The Managed Data Network is based on Newbridge's 36177 multiservices platform. To ensure more effective management of the network, each council have a Newbridge 36100 remote access server installed that will manage its connection to the core services infrastructure. The entire network will be monitored and managed remotely by both Newbridge and MLL, using leading edge network and service management systems, therefore significantly reducing the service support requirements placed on the councils. Newbridge's 36177 multi-service platform significantly reduces network operations, administration and maintenance by bringing ATM adaptation and traffic consolidation to the network edge. It is ideal for consolidating different types of network traffic and can easily be adapted to meet future network requirements. Vaughn Armstrong, director of industry marketing, Newbridge Networks said: "We have noted a very high level of demand for broadband within the public sector, and this new broadband wireless network in Wales will enable the introduction of competitive communications services into rural Welsh communities. It will bring the main backbone of the UK telecommunications infrastructure into Wales, opening up many opportunities for new services in the region." Newbridge Networks designs, manufactures, markets and services wide area networking solutions for service providers in more than 100 countries. On February 23, 2000, Newbridge entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Alcatel, a world leader in end-to-end voice and data communications solutions systems. Alcatel's leadership in broadband access combined with the Newbridge leadership in ATM / MPLS / IP switched routing will make it one of the top players in the next-generation networking market with complete, end-to-end communication solutions. Newbridge current customers include the world's 350 largest telecommunications service providers. The Company employs more than 6,000 people on six continents.
