PC market crossed one million landmark in 1999: IDC

CIOL Bureau

Thursday, March 09, 2000

BANGALORE: The Indian PC market crossed the historic landmark of one million unit shipments in a single calendar Year in 1999, according to the PC Tracking Program of IDC (India). Overall PC shipments witnessed a growth of over 42 per cent in unit terms and 60 per cent in value over 1998. A total of 1,102,151 PCs were shipped in 1999, at a value of Rs 5,200 crores ($1.2 billion).

According to an IDC release, the achievement was commendable since the macro situation was unfavourable. "Political instability, slowdown in investments owing to Y2K problem, severe supply crunch for components were some of the macro factors which dampened market performance," the release said.

The home market ballooned in 1999 growing 89 per cent over 1998 and now accounts for 30 per cent of all PC shipments. Growing interest in and access to the Internet, launch of Home PC brands by MNC vendors, lower price points contributed to the growth of the home market. The average prices in the Desktop PC market did not come down significantly as price cuts in Intel processors were neutralised by increase in prices for motherboard, memory and hard disk.

A stagnant Portable PC market showed signs of growth in 1999 owing to increased corporate

buying for their executives. PC servers was another high growth area with 49 per cent more

units shipped in 1999. Penetration of PC servers into small and medium establishments and dotcom activity gave a fillip to PC Servers.

Despite launch of sub-Rs 40,000 and Rs 50,000 models by the branded players, local assemblers were not significantly impacted and along with the small brands had 57 per cent share of the market compared to 58 per cent in 1998, IDC said. Among the branded players, the Indian brands held their own as their market share moved from 46 per cent in 1998 to 48 per cent in 1999. HCL held on to its leadership position in 1999. Hewlett Packard and Wipro made major gains in market share.
