The 7.5 years was the design minimum satellite life from the get-go. However, the flight experience has been extremely good to date. All are operational; only one is sick but usable and it is relegated to a flight spare. Lifetime is based not only on failure rates but fuel utilization, battery degradation, and solar array degradation. I suspect fuel was saved by using a bit less spending more time in transit from the drop off orbit to the final orbit. For these reasons, a more recent lifetime estimate is 10 years. SSL does know how to build satellites.
