PB,

This still doesn't answer my question...

AMD has a long history of losing money selling cheap CPU's. Apparently that legacy dies hard.

PB .. <<<AMD is in very good position in the top end at the moment, at least wrt to MHz.

This still doesn't answer my question...or maybe it does, I guess.

PB, yes the spitfire will probably compete head to head with celeron, but to expect AMD to win all design wins at all costs is expecting too much. Besides I believe the low end will hardly determine AMD'S or Intel's fate; and AMD has been burned in the past concentrating on low end. The real battle will be over high end; Tbird or Mustang vs Willy. Rambus vs DDR or QDR. The win at Cebit by Tbird over Willy; if not a fluke could have far more significance for their future. If Merced aka Itanium aka Mckinley doesn't suceed, and Willy only matches or only slightly edges Tbird; Intel may need x-box far more than AMD would.
There is a interesting poll at Anand's seeing how many people would prefer Athlon 1000 or PIII 1000 if both were same price and both available. Athlon is winning vote by 3-1 even though PIII is slightly faster chip. Why? And if you can answer why, then you may know why Intel could loose significant market share with only slightly faster product or an expensive product, if these types of polls are accurate, and I certainly would consider this more accurate than Elmer's banner.
