Hi, Earlie. I was still living in Montreal at the time (I grew up there), and attended a few events. I was thinking I might have seen you (as if I'd remember 24 years later!), but a quick search of the web reminds me that the sailing events were held in Kingston.

The Tornado looks like one helluva boat (there's a picture of one, for anyone interested, at index.co.za ... "This boat is not for the faint hearted." ;) -- it must have been fun.

The only time I sailed was 20 years ago this month. My then-girlfriend and I were visiting her parents in Victoria, and borrowed a neighbour's boat, a little 14 foot sloop. We set off across the Saanich Inlet to visit the Bouchart Gardens, a distance of three or four miles, thinking it would be kind of cool to arrive by sea ... It was, but half way back the winds came up and things got, um, let's say exhilarating. I didn't know enough to be scared, and it was only when we were safely back on land that she pointed out to me what might have been the outcome of capsizing in those cold waters, fully clothed and a couple of miles offshore. Sometimes ignorance truly is bliss ... <g>

Do you do any recreational sailing these days, or would it just be anti-climactic?

As for Lightfoot, good if the government was embarrassed -- they deserved it.

Regards,
Terry
