I agree with you about the shedding of the expensive infrastructure. The problem that I see ahead is a capacity problem. There are not enough fab foundries around to keep up with the crushing demand that is quickly building due to the broadband explosion in chips dealing with both wire line and wireless. The optimum arrangement would be a strategic alliance with someone like IBM or TI.The fact that Intel is gearing up to make its own CDMA chips licensed by QUALCOMM makes one wonder how a customer can still use foundry space as QUALCOMM dose now to make its current generation CDMA chips. The order of use in a foundry is based on how much volume one dose and there level of importance in that food chain.Clearly QUALCOMM is the Gorilla and on top in that space but I would think they are somewhat vulnerable to the Fab owners like Intel.Like it or not QUALCOMM is now a supercharged semiconductor manufacturer that has significant advantages over all and enjoys a Gorilla status but still needs to knock on Intel and IBM's door to manufacture there chips.
