I think that Terabeam's technology is essentially
point to point. I believe it is advertised as P-MP since
at base stations, it is probably possible to split
an IR beam in several different directions. However,
these beams need to be perfectly aligned with IR sensors
on customer premises. This alignment requirement
makes the technology a P-P one.

I think that all NTRO shareholders can sleep easy
(except for the nosebleed valuation awarded to their
stock). The only wireless architecture that could be
affected at the margin (i.e., barely) by Terabeam's
technology is the ARTT ring architecture based on Triton
Networks fast Ethernet radios. This architecture
is similar to what Terabeam proposes to implement.
Note however that I am very skeptical that Terabeam
can provide the desired link reliability (five 9s
not two 9s) except over very short links and in
highly selected areas of the country.

TeraBeam is PTMP

The reason the signal is encrypted is that the laser is swept throughout an arc and every receiver receives every downstream in its sector. Encryption is used to ensure that customer A doesn't see what's being sent to customer B, etc. We should get more details at the formal unveiling tomorrow.

TB appears to be a genuine breakthrough. What remains to be seen is how well it works under actual field conditions and what sort of rollout can be expected. My personal belief is that the last mile is such a huge opportunity that there is ample room for many different solutions which will serve different market segments. From the customer's standpoint the key variables are bitrate, reliability, deployment times, and price points. The actual delivery technology is largely irrelevant.
