I am glad my Terabeam comments got some discussion going.

I got much more educated on laser "last mile" stuff this weekend just by poking around the web. Here is a neat site showing already existing equipment that works over 9 miles.

Here's a comment from that site:

Both the Magnum and SupraConnect high-speed laser-communication systems are designed to communicate through moderate fog and rain. During tests at our 4 km and 7.3 km test ranges, we routinely communicate through fog and rain that prevent us from seeing the other end of the link with the unaided eye or with a viewing scope.

lsainc.com

The site was educational. Those interested could poke around here and have some fun. Unfortunately, these guys aren't public (or else I'd look for a play on Monday).

Just think of how much long haul FO equip will be needed if the last mile solution is solved, the demand for bandwidth will skyrocket, thus it is a net positive for all the long haul transporters (GBLX, Q, LVL, etc) and the FO component makers (JDSU, SDLI, ETEK, etc.) as well.

Exactly. There are still many people out there who think their cell phone conversations are phone to phone over the air. The boom in wireless will mean even more Fiber Optics are needed.
