calculating ROI :

check out www.gainskeeper.com. (no need for Windoze Excel:-)
they also account for activities like splits, M&A, wash sale etc (which one would have to tweak manually with Excel, I assume).

I am told that "Annualized rate of return" is an enhancement they are considering implememting. (They have been providing this free service for just a few months now).
