I have found a couple of articles that seem to detail Sumitomo's efforts at building white LED's.....dont completely understand the implications so would appreciate any feedback. The only previous mention of Sumitomo on this thread was in regards to a lawsuit by Nichia....

Here is the first article...

Sumitomo Elec To Mass-Produce White LEDs

OSAKA (Nikkei)--Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. (5802) announced Monday that it will begin this fall to mass-produce white LEDs (light-emitting diodes). The company anticipates a large increase in demand for the LEDs, which are used in displays for mobile telephones.

In its first year, the firm plans to produce 5 million units each month. It is targeting first-year sales of 2 billion yen.

In the future, Sumitomo Electric Industries hopes to promote LEDs for use as an energy-efficient light source to replace sources such as fluorescent bulbs.

Nichia Corp. already offers a white LED, which it makes by coating blue LEDs with a fluorescent layer.

Sumitomo Electric Industries, however, developed a product in February 1999 in which the raw material of the LED itself emits white light. Since that time, it has worked on developing a marketable product.

The company will invest about 500 million yen in its Osaka works to equip the facility for production of the white LEDs.
