So, our friends at Intel will be able to book a $410 million paper gain (at today's prices) when they ship the appropriate number of Rambus-enabled chipsets, or whatever the strike point was.

This is another reason by Rambus will win. Intel always had the technological reasons for backing it. The warrants were iceing on the cake. Maybe Intel management had some hopes that when (and if) they ever were able to exercise the warrants Rambus stock might have, oh, doubled, from its former trading range in the 50 to 90 dollar area. Intel can now see how to realize a 400 or 500 or 600 million dollar gain on those warrents. Won't that help reported results for the next two or three years as they gradually sell off the position? Now, how to protect those paper gains? Easy...protect Rambus.
