It is the public who widens or narrows the spread. The spread distance is a function of volatility, liquidity, activity. It widens and narrows continually during the trading day. No market maker can control the width. They would be standing in the way of the freight train to try. That isn't the market maker function. Maintain doesn't mean defend beyond a nominal consideration.
