Rarebird, Japan, Asia, Taiwan tanking. Bad week predicted ahead in USA:

Japan slips back into aÿÿ recession

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ TOKYO (CBS.MW) -- Japan said Monday its economy
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ shrank for the second quarter in a row, with output
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ decreasing 1.4 percent during the last three months of
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ 1999 in a contraction that marks what economists
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ generally define as a recession

Taiwan stocks plunge ahead of elections

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ TOKYO (CBS.MW) -- Asian markets fell across the
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ board, with Taiwan stocks tumbling in their biggest
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ decline in 8 months amid tensions running up to the
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ nation's presidential elections. Tokyo's Nikkei Average
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ surrendered 1.5 percent as Japan's economic picture
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ clouded. At the forefront of the Taiwan sell-off,6%+, the
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ market has been beset by political concerns, with China
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ relations looming over the countdown to next weekend's
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ presidential elections. Some investors are hedging in
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ case the ruling Nationalist party is defeated.

Higher oil prices to show up in data

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- If you want to know why
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ the Fed is so worried about strong economic growth and
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ creeping inflation, just watch the economic data this
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ coming week.
With oil prices up nearly
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ threefold, many companies are looking for ways to pass
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ on higher costs to their customers.

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿHigher oil prices to show up in CPI Risk would come from a big jump in coreÿ inflation

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ "It'll be a hard week for financialÿ markets,"
said Diane Swonk, chief
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ economist at Bank One.ÿ
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ "People are bracing for the bad news."

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ "If there's a news maker, it'll be the surprise that the
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ core CPI is finally doing some damage,"
Orr said.

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ "And we could get higher than that," Swonk warned.

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ The core rates, which exclude food and energy prices,
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ will be much tamer, at 0.2 percent for the CPI and 0.3
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ percent for the PPI, the MarketWatch consensus says.

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ The risk is on the upside. Core inflation is almost
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ impossible to forecast, said First Union's Orr. "There
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ are a lot of things that can muck up these numbers,"
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ Swonk said. For one thing, the PPI will be higher in
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ February in part because tobacco prices won't fall again
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ as they did in January, when they helped push the core
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ rate down by 0.2 percent.

ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ "Dow stocks won't have a sustained rally until people
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ get hurt on the Nasdaq,"
Boockvar remarked.
