I have and USE DSL @ home From GTE. My biggest problem has been with the Administration From GTE not Technicial, when they can get around to getting the order completed the Techs have no problem making it work, and I have'nt had a Down sec that I am aware of.

I am sure the problems you folks In BA's area are experneniceing the same problems but to a different degree. The Technology works but sometimes the Order folks can't seem to get it right.

Lets Face it the Bells are not the best at emerging techonoloy. I have heard that Bellsouth is doing well with DSL and I belive that SBC is singing right along.

Anthony:

I think the problem in NYC is Bell Atlantic's mishandling of their DSL customers. I tried to subscribe to Bell Atlantic DSL service, but it took over three months after receiving my modem to get it working.

I had previously ordered DSL from Redconnect and it has worked beautifully.....It is more expensive than the service from Bell Atlantic (79.95 per month), but you don't buy the modem, they rent it to you. It has had outages since last July when I first became a customer - the longest was about 12 hours, but these are very rare. (Approximately 5 outages since July of about 1 hour average duration). I would seriously suggest you give them a try....I consistently receive about 800K although I only pay for 640K.

If you are interested, their customer service number is 1-800-733-9001.

I disagree. Once you get cable you will realize that none of the alternatives are very reliable either. You will soon come to the realization that broadband some of the time is better than 56K all of the time. OR use 56K as backup with free service as I do. My cable has gotten a little better recently. I am sure DSL will as well.

Anthony,
Bell Atlantic regular internet service is remarkably poor in Staten Island. I have them for my ISP and all I can say is that the service is inconsistent at best. Constant disconnections, slow performance, and sometimes I just cannot get on line. I attribute this to their upgrading of their lines for DSL. When I first started with Bel 2 years ago they were fine.

I do not dislike the internet because of this however. I dislike Bell Atlantic service which, in the process of ugrading service, has actually made it more unreliable at present. I expect this will not be forever.

All the best,
Michael
