SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 2000--

The S2092 Offers Designers High Performance and
Significantly Reduced Power in a Low Cost Solution

Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AMCC) (NASDAQ:AMCC), a leader in
high-bandwidth silicon connectivity solutions for the world's optical
networks, today announced the S2092 clock and data recovery device
with 2.5 and 2.67 Gbps operation.
An addition to the company's serial backplane family, the S2092 is
ideal for short-haul connections that enable bandwidth expansion
within network equipment such as wavelength routers. Featuring low
power dissipation, 460 mW typical, from a single +3.3V power supply,
and a compact 7mm X 7mm TQFP package, the S2092 is optimized for
high-density designs.
"The S2092 is a key device in expanding the internal bandwidth of
optical core network equipment," said Paul Duran, AMCC's product
marketing manger for datacom products. "Combined with other robust
AMCC products, such as the S2018 crosspoint, the S2092 offers a high
performance/low cost solution for short-haul retiming in large
optical switch applications. These high port count switches are
typically implemented using multiple crosspoints and retimers in CLOS
3-stage architectures."
The S2092 utilizes on-chip high frequency Phase Lock Loop (PLL)
consisting of a phase detector, Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO)
and a loop filter for clock recovery. The phase detector compares the
phase relationship between the VCO output and serial data input, as a
loop filter converts the phase detector output into a smooth DC
voltage.
The VCO frequency is then varied by this DC voltage input. The
S2092 incorporates a lock detect function in order to monitor the
reliability of the serial data inputs. Featuring an internal
100(OMEGA) line-to-line termination on a high speed differential
input, the device's capabilities derive high speed timing signals with
a low-jitter serial CML interface.

Pricing and Availability

The S2092 is currently sampling with production release scheduled
for June, 2000. The device, packaged in a compact 7 mm x 7 mm 48-pin
TQFP/TEP, is priced at $29 in quantities of 1000.
